My Philosophy

Art is just as important, and in some ways more so, than many of the other disciplines that are being taught in the schools today. One cannot truly study or experience art properly without the examination of various cultures, subcultures and points of view. Art is about problem solving and the imagination. It exposes people to new concepts and ideas that can help to broaden their horizons. It also helps them to think for and express themselves in an educated and healthy manner. Art should be an exiting and fun exploration for students. Art lends itself to other discipline areas such subjects a Math, English and Social Studies in ways that other disciplines cannot. This aspect of art can only add to these types of explorations.

All of these things are useful in helping to equip students with the necessary tools for decision making and self-examination. Art aids in developing a student's ability to function in and contribute to society in a positive way. Art also helps students to be better-rounded individuals by letting them view and experience various works of art, as well as gain an understanding of the historical contexts in which the works were created. The latter is accomplished through teacher explanation and class discussion of works of Art. Encouraging students to participate in projects that are open ended, close ended and Laisse Faire helps them to acquire the aforementioned decision making skills. Examining, discussing and respecting the variety of subject matter and opinions expressed in the works of both established artists, as well as those of their peers, gives the students a tolerance, understanding and open-mindedness to new and different ideas. All of these skills are important in whatever career or walk of life that a student has in his or her future.
